It’s always great to stay in a place for longer than a few days, and what better place than Paris! For a few months, you’ll be able to experience this lovely city as a resident, not a tourist. I look forward to hearing about your time there.
All the best!

Life has a way of getting away from some of our dreams. Sometimes that’s fine for all the right reasons for a little while, but you should never let them go completely. I visited Provence back in October, 1978 when I was in the Army, and promised myself I would go back some day and paint (I’m an art lover). I had more travels (including Paris), then grad school, a new husband, then babies, mortgages, many jobs and a couple of career changes. Life does that. We did manage to take our girls on a trip to Europe in 2000 for our 20th anniversary, and take them around the US however.

In 2008 while my first daughter was off at college and the other one 16, I googled one day, and saw a painting class in Provence that followed the path of Van Gogh. It was nearly 30 years later, but I was healthy, unencumbered, and the class was affordable. I LOVED it. I then indulged in a few days in Paris afterwards. Other than the births of my children and grandchildren, it was one of the best experiences of my life.

And then, the year 2017 saw both my husband and me treated for cancer (him- thyroid, me- breast; both caught early). My near future trips have more urgency than ever now. Cancer does that. Other travel dreams on the horizon include the following: Lithuania and Poland to visit the villages of my ancestors next year, doing volunteer work in Israel with the Sar El Program, going back to Paris with my girls for my 70th, visiting China, introducing a fashionista friend to Florence, Italy for her 50th, and walking part of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain.

So here’s my advice— take care of your mind and body so you can enjoy your travel dreams whenever possible, and always stay curious.

Paris leaves an indelible impression on you and is indeed a movable feast. And SO much nicer and more livable than New York. Quality of living is wonderful. Want to hear all about it!!

Curious about this as well. It’s awesome you’re moving to Paris, but yeah just wondering the specifics too. Did you actually get a visa or are you just hoping you can stay there for 6 months uninterrupted because of the bilateral agreement? Did you get any written confirmation about it? And I also thought you have to enter from a different country before going to France? I’m wondering all this for myself too because I’d like to do something similar. Thanks in advance!!

After reading your post you link to, “your guide to legally staying in Europe”, I’m still not clear how you can stay in Paris for longer than 90 days based on the options you outlined, with any real certainty or official confirmation. I suppose you are doing the ‘promise not to work’ visa? Or, you are relying on the ‘bilateral agreement’ you mention, but you also mention this doesn’t seem to be official or systemized enough to rely on it. I would appreciate a quick expansion on this 🙂 Very curious

I was hoping that this was going to be a learning experience of how to permanently move. With all the blogs and readings, I am still adrift as to how to gain easy permanent status. I’ve lived in Amsterdam for over 2 years on a Dutch/American treaty which I may again try.
I hear Florence has a retirement Visa and I meet the requirements.
I’ve done the Consulate searches – ugh.
Well, have a wonderful experience. You are already in love so it won’t be difficult. Best Wishes.

Paris would be such a cool city to live in. I’m not a huge fan of cities, I admit, but Paris just has SO much history!
