Millions of Russians still go there driven by nostalgia and the image of a paradise created by the media.
And who can argue – it’s an amazing part of the world. It pretty much has everything you may want from a tourist destination.
Now, I actually enjoyed neighbouring Armenia more, maybe because my expectations were quite low, but Georgia was awesome too. Tbilisi has fairy tale old town. Caucasus mountains are the highest in Europe and won’t leave you disappointed. Food is super delicious.
But I agree with previous comment about Gori – I also feel uneasy about how Stalin is revered there. A Georgian hotel owner recommended me to visit Stalins museums but quickly apologised when I told him that my own country lost a third of its population because of actions of this despot. You wouldn’t expect to see a museum dedicated to Hitler in Berlin, would you?

The food (and wine) was to die for, the architecture stunning and the people very friendly. It’s a shame I didn’t get a chance to head into the Caucasus, but I will return for a hiking trip one day soon. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s very easy to visit nearby Baku in Azerbaijan on the overnight train if you want to explore more of the region.

As it is about 3 hours flight from Riga we Latvians are visiting Georgia quite often. We have been are always very welcomed there and the Baltic people are considered big friends of Georgians (and we really are). Just some notes.
– Tbilisi is really awesome. I’ve traveled a lot but it is still one of my favorite cities in the world. As for the sulfur bath, well it’s a unique yet still very soviet experience. There are separate sections for men and women. The infrastructure is very outdated though. You’ll have a glimpse of soviet-style there;
– Khachapuri is a good thing. Yet, Georgians eat bread and meat-based products a lot and they are very hospitable. So, at one moment, it gets a bit too much (especially considering the extra weight you gain 🙂
– David Gareja is a place to visit for sure. Especially if you like something a bit off-the-beaten-path. I have an article on this place;
– Georgia is actually the first recorded country where the wine was made. So you cannot get wrong with it. I’m not the fan or Georgian whites, but reds are awesome (don’t hesitate to buy them even in plastic bottles in the shops).
– Svaneti is a different world in Georgia. It’s worth many hours from Tbilisi to get there but go during the summer season. I got 11 degrees and rain in May there.
– Don’t forget about the Kazbegi mountain area – a paradise for hikers.
– Gori is the place where Latvians usually don’t go and we do not recommend others to do so too (Stalin killed too many people to be honored by a visit or any attention at all). This evil personality is the only point of disagreement we have with Georgians.
There are some other more hidden but not less gorgeous paces to go there.
I love Georgia and recommend everyone to go there!

A paradise for hikers and wine lovers! Wow…I couldn’t have asked for a better destination! The fact that it’s inexpensive and safe makes it an even better deal.

Just in time for my travels from Asia back toward South America. The Khachapuri point brings back one of my fondest memories of making a new friend in Hawaii from Georgia. She cooked us some authentic Georgian cuisine from what we could find at the local store. Definitely going to check back on your post before I go. Thanks, Matt.
