Best places to see is by car and away from falang places (falang=white person or tourist)
Get off the highway and travel the small roads, stop in villages and explore the real Thailand.
A few things before you go. Do NOT exchange your money at home. You will get a MUCH better rate in Thailand. Look for superich exchanges. Also do NOT exchange money inside the airport. If you fly to Phuket, there is an exchange just accross the road from the airport, 2 minute walk, called “Airport exchange” (google it if you want a map and a streetview). They have the best rate I have come accross anywhere in Thailand.
Secondly, buy a sim card on the airport as soon as you got your luggage. Dtac tourist sim is cheap and works a treat. They will install it for you and you can top up in convinient shops or online or in one of many Dtac shops if needed. I used it for internet and messenger calls overseas.
If you travel by yourself or as a couple, don’t book hotels from home either. Once there, google “accommodation near me” or ask the locals for good places. I have stayed in MANY hotels and bungalows with aircon and private bathroom and often including breakfast (some even with pool) for between Australian $15-30 per night.
A few courtesy things goes a long way. Learn a few very basic words and phrases like “hello”, “thank you” (the 2 most important), “how much does it cost?”, “The food is very nice”, “Can I please order” and “keep the change”. Find it online. You can also use Google translate and I have never met a Thai without a smartphone and they do know how to use them no matter how poor they seem to be.
Always smile when you speak to a Thai person. It’s a cultural thing. If there are shoes on the step outside a shop, take yours off before entering.
My favourite places are too many but landscape…Krabi area…beaches can be Phuket or Khao Lak but Hua Hin or most of Prachuap Kiri Khan beaches are great. Bangkok travel is easiest done with sky train or underground. Everywhere else, I recomend driving. Remeber to get your international drivers licence before you go. There are plenty of good companies to rent from and I have dealt with Ninas on Phuket (limited to drive around Phuket and only the closest provinces due to insurance but definitely worth it if you are staying there) and Chicarent. Both have insurance and a lot of special deals and the cars are great and well maintained.
The street food can look a bit challenging sometimes if you are used to all the food hamdling and safety in a western country but it is usually awesome and often you see them cook it infront of you so you know it’s fresh and is is so cheap! Gai yang, grilled chicken and som tum, spicy papaya salad is a must try. You can live of that stuff ?
Enjoy your trip.

Don’t ride the elephant’s when in Thailand, they are threat them very bad, in Phuket, it¨s acctuly a Elephant park, where you can go and feed them, and wash them, there they give you alot of information, why you should NOT ride Elephants!

Have a nice trip!

Everything here is super helpful, thank you. My gf and I are planning a trip to Thailand next July. My first question is, what is typically a reasonable cost for flight there? We are travelling on a budget, however not wanting to stay in hostels. What is your suggestion when it comes to the first couple days, should we book hotel with flight? or find a place when we get there? We do not have a plan yet as to where we want to go, but we definitely want to see some islands and stay in each area. Any suggestions and advice would be most helpful.

I am older and more affluent. I just came back from 29 days in Thailand that included a short trip to Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. I stayed in higher end spots, with one hostel night and some smaller hotels. I also took flights to Siem Reap and inside Thailand. And I bought a few pieces of more expensive jewelry, some cheaper pieces and lots of silk scarves. My trip was not backpacker cheap and I like my beers out. This was single older female travel. I budgeted $5000. And came in under that including my airfare over. Certainly did not scrimp and enjoyed an elephant camp and several boat rides and a six day tour. Just a note from a traveler who does stay higher end and spends more to say this for me was an affordable trip. There are a lot of young ones staying in hostels and traveling on tight budgets who are having a grand time. I think Thailand is great travel for all budgets!

We are a couple with two children, one of 10 and another of 4 years and we are going to Thailand to spend 30 days. We would like to know if with THB 100000 just for food, drink and transportation we managed to get through this period.
Transport would be taxis and boats to the beaches as we will stay in Krabi, Railay, Chiang Mai and Bangkok.
Anyway, this value is only for fun since travel and lodging are paid for.
Thank you 🙂

I fly into Bangkok the end of September. I see that tourist season starts in Nov. Should I head north to Chiang Mai first to save more $$, or south to the islands and pray I won’t get caught in the rain? The trip is up until the end of December, but I did want to explore South East Asia a bit..
What do you think?!

The cheapest flight is listed at 1350. Is that reasonable or should we wait for it to go down? I can’t seem to find any sites that tell me what a reasonable price is. I know many people who got theirs for anywhere from 700-900 but they weren’t traveling over the holidays. Any help would be awesome! Thanks!
