Maybe one of the reasons Black women don’t travel solo in great numbers is because some of us know what happens to a lot of us when WE COME BACK INTO THE UNITED STATES! While Black women are the least likely to be carrying drugs in or on their person, they are 9 times more likely to be strip and body cavity searched when coming home when traveling solo! This was reported by the Government Accountability Office back in 2000 and still happening. Just traveling from an International airport in U.S. can be a more than degrading and shocking experience for us. Just ask Diana Ross!

As a solo black traveler I get stopped everywhere I go because people think I’m some sort of NBA player. Been called Kobe Bryant, Lebron, Shaq… just for being tall and black. We need to not be afraid and get out there. I work for a travel agency now and I’m on a mission to offer the black community more opportunities to travel together.

Hi! Matt here! As a white male, this isn’t a topic I know anything about and, when this guest article was pitched to me, it sounded interesting, especially in light of previous studies I’ve read that show Black American travels do travel solo a lower number than white travelers. The author had credentials and who am I to argue that her experience or her insight is somehow wrong or biased? This is obviously an opinion article and her reasons why she feels Black American women don’t travel solo in high numbers. I can’t say she’s right or wrong. It’s an opinion article and I have no regrets over publishing it.

If you want to disagree, please do so in a way constructive rather than a personal way. Let’s not fall into the trap so often on social media of making things personal. There are real people behind this with feelings and emotions just trying to do the best they can. This article was written in good faith and with no ill intent.

Copy the above. The tone of this article was extremely insulting. I hope the author can make a wider circle of friends. Maybe even join the Facebook group for black female travelers with over 100k members? My single black friends take multiple solo trips every year and we write about them.

I travel for the same reason! I’m not really drawn to beaches, but more cultural experiences. Totally agree.
