I loved reading this!
I’m a solo mama and traveling with my baby since he was 6 weeks old.
I have lived a fairly nomadic life, so it wasn’t going to stop me. I do have a base, but travel, sometimes for months at a time, despite ALL the naysayers and my family being like ‘it’s dangerous etcetc’ Whatever.

I’m heavily tattooed and have a quirky style, and before, people would only approach me for drugs or something ( not that I do them, they just assumed- im actually a straight edge vegan who doesn’t even drink alcohol). Now locals and everyone comes up and talks to me with a baby! It’s fantastic! :0

We just came back from our Melbourne trip, 4hrs 20 mins short flight both ways at 18months of age and he was a dream. Next trip, we’re planning is Berlin!

Keep up the travel inspiration mate! That’s awesome!!

🙂

It’s more of a passion, anything can be done as long as your willing to do it.

I have a six month old and have taken him on three hikes already, not once did he cry or sleep, I used an ergobaby carrier and he gets a good view of where we go.

When I travel, I like having no contraint of any kind. I want to do whatever I want whenever I want and only care about my needs. I like to be free. So no, I wouldn’t enjoy traveling with children as much as traveling with my fiancé. I like peace and having to deal with cries or tantrum, just no.

It does take a bit more effort and planning, but I have traveled quite a bit with my son as well. He’s seen most of the east and south of the US when he was younger (he’s now 8), and in the past few years we have gone to Panama and the Bahamas. We are heading to Grand Cayman this summer as well. I plan to continue globetrotting with him till he hits college! 😉

Just last night, I got in a conversation with my family who has 2 little ones that lives in VA (I live in WI) and they were saying once again, “Well, you guys could hop on a plane and come visit”. I feel like just because we don’t have children (yet) that we’re always the ones who have to come to them. They don’t ever come to visit us because of the “kid excuse”. I want to send them your blogs but they will for sure retaliate with, “Well, you just don’t know!” Drives me nuts!

At any rate, I was thankful to read these because my husband and I know that travel is possible with kids. It’s a choice and it’s attainable! I’m going to keep this in mind for when we do finally start a family (which will hopefully be sometime this fall). Thanks again!

Great to hear from a fellow and Canuck and Vancouverite! I agree, it’s important to start traveling with your little ones as soon as you’re comfortable. The earlier they (and you) learn to adapt to travel, the more conditioned they will be as they grow. I can’t wait to travel with my boys when they’re a little older and have questions about the world.

I appreciate your comment Sonja! Hopefully our future posts will show that it IS possible to travel with young children. Your love of travel does not need to stop just because you’ve decided to have a family

Thanks for the thoughtful and insightful comment Christy! It’s great to hear the stories of other traveling families.

Great tip regarding comfy clothes Carolyn. While I can’t comment on traveling as a single parent of a teen, I’ve found that traveling with family and friends is a great way to spread out your “family time” and allow yourself some “me” time.

I really enjoyed reading this article. When I was 4-5 years old, my mom and dad moved temporarily to New Zealand and Australia for my dad’s work. Being so young, I didn’t retain many memories, but I do know I had an absolute blast. My parents travelled to the US a ton with me, even when I was just a teeny tiny kid. I don’t think they had any problems and I always loved travelling to Las Vegas to visit my family. I’m really glad my parents took me on so many travelling adventures when I was a child because now at age 21, I love travelling and have never had a fear of flying. Airsickness, carsickness, and seasickness mean nothing to me. :p you have to start young with your children! If I ever have kids, they are going abroad the moment they start to walk. Or at least before they’re 6.
