I used to notice exactly what you talked about, the trampling over of local culture and customs for our selfies. I am sure I too am guilty at least a couple times of totally ignoring where I was and who I was with for the perfect shot or snippet.

During the pandemic however it seems travelers have a more genuine interest and care for these same places and people. I don’t know if the lower tourist numbers are allowing a more intimate interaction with these places and people that is driving it or what, but it’s noticeable.

In reply to Robert S.. I think once we reach herd immunity, many airlines will end their guidelines. I think masks are gonna be a mandate until the fall.

I wonder how much travel is going to change once we fully come out of COVID. I have to imagine that airlines will maintain their guidelines, as they relate to social distancing and the like, for starters.

I do think that many destinations have found a new equilibrium (obvi not a perfect one for all people) without the droves of tourists, because they have had to out of necessity. And I hope that gives them some leeway/leverage when they are planning for the return of tourists, so they can implement more sustainable practices, rules, regulations, etc…we must start caring more for our planet!

It’ll be so interesting to see how it all pans out once the pandemic is over. I am cautiously optimistic. While I do observe the positive trend towards sustainability and avoiding overtourism going forward, I’m afraid that by the time tourists can return, the local budgets are going to be so depleted that there won’t be much space for environmentally and culturally conscious practices. Let’s see. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
