In reply to Phillippa. Canada is similar to Australia in terms of costs. You can find ways to make it cheaper but if you're staying in hotels, doing tourist activities, and eating at decent restaurants, it definitely adds up. We also have a website dedicated to both Alberta and Canada and go over these in videos on YouTube as well. Either way, it's an awesome province to explore!

Surely if you only have 10 days in Alberta you limit your time in Calgary (unless here for Stampede) and skip Edmonton altogether. It’s all about the mountains and small towns when it comes to exploring the province

Sorry, I forgot to mention Canmore, which is on the way to Banff from Calgary. It’s a picturesque small town, not as busy as Banff, but with great restaurants and pubs, as well as the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. The latter is supposed to be great for Cross-Country Skiing in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer. 🙂

Very informative article, as someone who lived in Alberta for 4 years, many of these places are familiar to me 🙂 I’d like to add a few destination tips though, like Drumheller (especially the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the ‘hoodoos’), Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump close to Fort MacLeod (cool place to learn about Native American history in the area), and Waterton Lakes National Park (less crowded than Banff and Jasper, but just as beautiful). All of these are only a short drive from Calgary. Of course, it’s hard to cover everything in 10 days, but it’s always possible to come back someday 🙂

Looking to spend two months travelling through Canada and trying to work out budget. Have you got any information on how much it would be?

I have searched online and it suggesting about $100 AUD per person per day which works out to about $12,000. Which seems really high.

Matt, a few years ago my son, daughter-in-law and I flew into Calgary and bicycled the Icefield Parkway. It was a fantastic trip in all regards. We spent a week exploring this diamond of Canada and camped – although some of the hotels we saw along the way = fantastic. Thanks for a great guide to exploring Alberta.

Great info! We did a 10 day trip to Canadian Rockies last September, and it’s up there with one of the best vacations I’ve ever gone on. We would highly recommend to anyone. We did a couple big hikes but there also scenic options for people of all abilities. Although not in Alberta, I also highly recommend Yoho National Park. The sights were stunning and much less crowded than Banff and Jasper. We also took a trip east from Calgary to Dinosaur Provincial Park. Although it was in the opposite direction of everything else we did, it was worth the drive to experience the badlands part of Alberta.
